Bridge between Science and business

The field of artificial intelligence offers numerous opportunities for companies, and can quickly become confusing for a small or medium sized business (SME). Our mission is to support your business on its AI journey by offering consulting on best practices, implementing your very own company AI and developing customized use cases together to boost efficiency.

Therefore DGKI strives to build a bridge among the latest scientific research in the field of AI and the technologies actual application in real world SMEs. We are also happy to support you in communicating the implementation of AI within your company, based scientifically proven methods, to ensure your employees embrace this breakthrough technology as a helpful tool.

In collaboration with the scientific community and business practitioners, we discuss the following questions on an
ongoing basis:

  • What are the specific benefits of introducing AI for SMEs?
  • What are the prerequisites and when can the first results be expected?
  • How can SMEs make the process of introducing and using AI as efficient as possible?
  • Which AI systems can SMEs use today in a technically secure, ethically safe and (data protection) legally compliant manner?
  • How can SMEs stay at the cutting edge of technology and not become dependent on providers?
  • How do SMEs effectively build up the necessary AI expertise?
  • Which stakeholders are needed for internal implementation?
According to a recent survey by the Mittelstand 4.0-Kompetenzzentrum Kaiserslautern, around 75 % of the 568 companies surveyed from industry, trade and services classify themselves as explorers and beginners with regard to digitalization.

Hence, a combination of “AI as a service” and close cooperation with an experiences partner such as the DGKI appears to be the ideal way for SMEs to jointly develop an individual company AI. According studies, this is most likely to prevent the introduction of AI from failing due to a lack of expertise or technical resources.

Areas of Research

Knowledge Management

Large Language Models (LLM) increase the accessibility and thus the value of the information and data collected in companies. Particularly in SMEs, valuable information is often hidden in silos and in unstructured form. Obtaining relevant information ist often time consuming. Be it looking up a process description, information on a product or the search for current key figures. LLM and chatbots can help to find and understand this information more quickly and thus help to make faster decisions. Especially for complex data queries in the area of business intelligence LLM can empower employees, to make better data-based decisions.

Virtual Customer Service

Chatbots with different skill levels are already being used to guide customers. Chatbots that answer frequent customer queries are already quite widespread in large corporations. The capabilities of these AI-based systems are currently developing rapidly. The widespread availability of generative AI is also expected to lead to a rapid and significant improvement in response quality. Besides Chatbots, automatic E-Mail responses and phone calls are being developed. Research in this are is of the utmost interest to SMEs.

AI Assistants

AI systems are becoming personal companions in all areas of daily life and at work. The ability of modern AI systems to understand natural language opens up completely new possibilities for interaction. They are not only used to perform functional tasks but are also seen as personal companions. By continuously learning about their users, they do not forget anything and offer conceptual and personalized help. This opens up numerous questions for scientific research to optimize human-AI interactions.

Augmented Work

From replacing to augmenting: humans and AI as a dynamic duo in the world of work. According to an annual survey, employees with a university degree are significantly more concerned that technology will make their jobs obsolete (8 % in 2021 - 20 % in 2023). The extent to which Generative AI will influence jobs will also be shaped by software providers. Generative AI will be deeply integrated into the daily IT-tools. Research in the area of augmented work basing on the human-in-the-loop” principle is paramount to the discussion of the level of desirable automation through AI.

Human AI Education

How can SMEs sustainably develop their employees in the age of artificial intelligence? Time-consuming activities, such as the evaluation of documents, sales analyses or travel planning can be be (partially) automated step by step over the next be (partially) automated. Through retraining and training of these employees, work in SMEs can be increased in terms of attractiveness, quality and added value - e.g. through quality and added value - e.g. through the targeted development of new services and business models on the basis of the freed-up human resources.
